    New replacement starter solenoid question

Looking for help with the wiring of a starter solenoid. In the picture, you will see 2 solenoids. One, on the left, is the broken one off an '82 GS850L I'm working on. The one on the right is one I picked up a few years ago and am wanting to use on the 850.

However...the original only has one green/yellow wire coming out of it that goes to the starter button. The new one has 2 wires coming out of it, a red/white and a blue/white.

My questions are...I am guessing I only need one of the wires coming out of the new solenoid, right? And close the second wire off, right? But, and here's the big question...which wire do I use as the new green/yellow wire?

    Thanks

The "size requirements" are for avatars, not for posting pictures. Pictures work best if you have them hosted someplace like Photobucket, then paste the IMG link to the pictures. I have my Photobucket settings to re-size any picture I upload to 800x600, which is a decent viewing size and minimizes storage space on their site. Click on any of the links in my sig to see the bike and see what that size looks like.

Now, back to your original question:
You may connect either one of the wires to your green/yellow wire, but you must connect the other one to a ground. Putting a ring terminal and putting it under a solenoid mount bolt works quite well. The original solenoid is gounded through its metal housing, your new one appears to have a plastic housing, so it needs the separate ground.

Thanks Steve. I knew if anyone had the answer, you would. I was leaning in that direction, but wanted verification before I made a mistake.

As for the pics, I'll take your advice. What I originally did was size it to 800x600, uploaded it to my picture album here on GSR and used the URL from it. I guess I did something wrong. But again, I'll follow your instructions on future pics.

            Thanks again!
