    Intermittent part throttle 'skip'?

    I have a 1985 GS550L that is well kept and only has about 4700 miles on the clock. I replaced plugs, fuel lines, popped open the carbs and cleaned em out (they were very clean inside already) replaced the air filter with new OEM filter, replaced the battery, and installed a compufire reg.

    The bike had been overcharging previous to the reg change, now it seems to be doing fantastic, battery tender charges for a minute or two and goes green. voltmeter indicates good voltages as well.

    The problem I am having is that sometimes when cruising in 5th or 6th gear around 4-6000 rpm, when I roll on the throttle the bike seems to lose power and it feels like it skips a bit for lack of any better term.. not a dead miss, but like the ignition is breaking up. roll back out, roll back in, and it usually goes away. On one or two occassions I have down shifted to 4th and rolled in and it seemed to go away.

    I havent felt it in any lower gears, and most generally the bike runs like a new one. Idle is steady at 1200rpm, the bike starts easy, no noises, and it hasnt backfired or anything.

    So whats the likely culprit here? Coils? resistor tips? cdi box? other?

    I don't think its a carb issue, thats why I posted in this sub forum, in my experience carbs aren't intermittent like this though, a clogged jet is always clogged..

    Interested in hearing opinions on this.

      I vote for other! OK, you sorta cleaned carbs and got lucky as it starts, idles and runs ok, but did you check float heights? Maybe, fuel level is too low at times.

          Float height checked OK, I'd say if its a fuel issue its more likely the petcock, but thats not really what it seems like.. if the carbs were running dry it would seem to me that it would happen in the lower gears too, possibly even more often as I never see real high rpm's in top gear, whereas I do wring it out a bit in the lower gears..

          This is only happening once in a while, and only after cruising at a steady speed in a high gear..

          I have ridden all day and not had it happen, or had it happen once and then not again for the rest of a ride.. it's very intermittent.

          yesterday I washed the bike presuming that if it were bad wires or resistor tips that it would be apparent after soaking them, but it ran fine after.

              It also seemed to start after the regulator change, though that may be coincidental.

                  Yeah, could be petcock failing to deliver enuff from time to time.Try running in "prime" spot at highway speed and see what happens. But make sure to put in back in "on or res" spot later!

                      So I think it might be "other", I rode it yesterday and after some high speed running it really acted up, and puked fuel out of the rh carb.. upon disassembly it looks like a PO tried to remove the needle/seat and crimped it with pliers, the needle felt like it hung a little instead of moving freely in the seat. Anything further on this I will post in the appropriate forum. Once I get the carbs finished I'll see if it still 'skips'
