    AC Generator Operation

On my '81 GS650G, does the AC generator begin charging the battery at 5000rpms? I'm asking because I'm still working on the carbs and can't get the bike to rev beyond 4000rpms and, at 4000rpms, I'm only getting 13 volts at the battery.

    Thanks!

Basscliff provided you with his megawelcome in your first thread from three days ago. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=209896
If you go back and look, you will find a wealth of information, including how to check the charging system. There are literally hundreds of threads here in the archives on this same subject too. All the information is there just waiting for you to use.

Basscliff says the stator kicks in at 4000rpms but my service manual says to make the reading at 5000rpms, unfortunately I can't get the bike up to 5000rpms.

If it won't run well enough to ride who cares about charging?
        Fix it all.

I plan on fix it all. Just wondering when that stator should kick in.

          Thanks.

No; it begins at 1500-2000 RPM depending upon your load and how much power your stator will generate at that RPM.

So it sounds like there is a definitely problem.

              Thank you.

wasn't referring to you bro ... just the resident 'no-one should be able to learn from someone else's questions' guy.
But as usual, Posplayr rises above that crap.

That's helpful, thank you. I'll test the stator next but I can't get the bike past 4000rpms. Guess I should finish the carbs first.

                        Thanks again everyone.

The Stator Papers, as linked in Basscliff's megawelcome, and on the GSR home page, shows how to check the charging system.

The Finding Fault chart says to rev the engine to 2500 rpm and then check voltage - below 13.5 volts is a fail. You don't need to rev to 5000 rpm to find faults like noted here. More details in the Stator Papers.

I don't like to spoon feed. It's sort of like feeding squirrels at the park; if you do it all the time they become dependant. Give a man a fish and they eat for a day. Teach a man to fish...
