Curious :>) Points Or Dyna Whos Better

With all the work on my bike from fork seals to rebuild carbs an exhaust, pods and Valve shimming and after adjusting points seems to running OK! Will recheck the compression after a few tanks of gas was about a 100 on all 4 before shim adjustment.

Ordered a Dyna electronic ignition

Question is it worth spending a 100 bucks on dyna ignition (expect this week b4 the 4th) or is it better to stay OEM points at least you can limp home on points. Maybe it does not matter, what do the Other GS owners think?

well as you have already ordered it you will find out how much easier and better the Dyna ignition is when you fit it....

I think that a set of OEM points and condensers will also cost a hundred bucks. I think there maybe cheaper ones than OEM, but I bought OEM for my old '79 850G. Pays your money and takes your choice. Dyna seems to work well. My Skunk has one.

The only advantage to points is they will run when you are down much lower on voltage.
If the charging system is working as it should be then the Dyna really is the way to go.

Twice I've limped home from 200ks away on points.When my Dyna failed I sat and waited for help.Points every time.

Points for me never been stranded, tried the dyna being stranded sucks. I keep a extra set of points and condensers with me.

Seems like a few of you guys have experienced failed Dyna systems.... is it common for those to fail? I've been considering the upgrade as I've read a lot of good things about it, but if they're failure prone then I think I'll stick to points.

My ED came with electronic ignition, which I have stayed with even though I am wired for a dyna S. being directly mounted to the engine is a pretty hostile environment even for modern electronics. There is even s new design out recently to compete with the dyna S but by the looks of it I personally would wait to see how robust it is. To my eye it appears very vibration sensitive.

Having said that, I have a couple of TT500 based flattrack bikes, and I use points on both of them because they are easily repaired or replaced at the track. On that bike they also spin at half of crank speed so they aren't worked so hard.

I have had one Dyna module fail after 8 years, and seen their modules last 20 years, so it's +1 for Dyna for me. The newly designed modules look like they would dissipate heat much better than the old ones. As for stranded with low voltage, it doesn't happen if you fix the electrical system flaws.

Seems to be Points in the lead here, lot of good details here.

Sounds like a good idea to keep a backup set of points, will save the old plate and points better an hour to put it back then to be left stranded.

No problems with the pods but it's early yet

The Engine sounds good had one problem getting the timing on #4 to work
Sometimes it sparked and sometimes it didn?t

What I found after swapping the coils not the problem, Apparently one of the 10 times had the plugs out must have banged the plug no gap no spark, Easy fix..

The Dynatek DS3-2 arrived installed and timed works great.
used the extra wire ignition for the Dyna left over from the Ignition relay mode so no need to do the piggy back connector

one snag in saving the old points you have to reintall the old advance lobe
