Parts list for 78 GS550 upgrade?

I'm getting together a list of parts to bring the system up to a bit more modern standards. So far I've got

I'm also planning to replace the stator and any other electronics as well as the fuse box. My question is what other parts should I replace? I don't believe I need the solenoid or relay any longer with the ignition upgrade? And what is a good quality stator? Can I use something like this?

Or is that not a very good stator? Any advice is greatly appreciated, the wiring and stuff on this bike wasn't the greatest and we will be tearing the whole thing down pretty soon and completely rebuilding it but I'd like to get it running properly before we start doing that.

That Caltric stator should be OK - Basscliff uses one still, I think.
Consider getting a series R/R ,which will help the stator's life.
You're best to stick with with ignition relay mod if you got one already.

How about a 650 top end?

Lol, eventually we'll be looking at doing a 650 top end I think, I'm not sure if we just need the jug and pistons or that or do we need the entire top end?


What does R/R stand for? I don't think the current ignition has a relay mod, I'm going to have to test it out and see how much voltage we get when everything is working correctly.

One question, will any stator for a GS550E/L/So on fit any other 550? Was thinking maybe something like this might be a little better.

Yeah, probably, but then you definitely better get a series R/R or that stator's lovely blue hue will likely be BBQ. Lots of gs stators are same size- connectors don't matter much cuz you going to cut them when you wire it direct to R/R.

quick summary; you got only two choices, Compufire 55402 ( I think) or a Shindengen sh775

You will do a little better on the Dyna green coils and wires at Z1 Enterprises. The Polaris part you are looking for can be found on a Polaris 2011 R11HR76AG/AR Ranger 6X6 800 EFI, part number, 35A 3PH Series Regulator105C 4012941 (SH-775). If you can't find that a CompuFire 40A three phase Regulator 55402 would do nicely, probably the better part, but a lot more expensive.

Well I can't even find the SH775..... hmm The Compu-Fire seems to be on amazon for like 160.

Don't look for the SH-775, look for the Polaris part number 105C 4012941. It is a SH-775. http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detai...P-4012941.html

Ok you posted while I was typing and I didn't see that until now haha! Thanks, so how much worse do you think the Polaris part is? I don't think we'll be adding any sort of insane electronics to the bike.....

The CompuFire is a heavier duty unit, only time will tell if it is the better part. The SH-775 seems more matched to the output the bike is capable of but has a shorter track record to date. Yes, you would need to get connectors, I don't have that information, but others have found them.

Hmm ok, well I'll have to see what I can talk him into lol. The Compu-Fire really isn't that much but he's also paying for a wedding currently as well lol.
