    Broken Switch

    Hi,

    I have a '83 GS 450 A - Suzukimatic - that has been giving me tons of problems...but mostly because I'm foolish. The screws to the turn signal switch feel out and when I replaced them - I did it with screws that were too long which smashed up the wiring in there and kept blowing the main fuse.

    I finally figured it all out (with some help from the forum - thanks!) - but now I've got the problem of a rare 30 year old bike and a broken switch. Anyone know if any of the ~1983 or similar years GS switches will work?

      Need to know is it the left or right switch and a picture would help Oh my bad I just reread the post it is a turn signal switch

          So sorry - Left hand turn signal switch - I'll go take some pictures.

              OK - I found out that the switch is not interchangeable :-( so I'm trying to fix the one I have and I'm loosing my mind - where have I gone wrong?

              I ordered a new switch but mistakenly did not read the description that said 'turn signal doesn't work' (who sells a broken switch?!). Anyway, with two broken switches in hand I set about to make one that works.

              I cleaned all the connection points and re-assembled the new broken switch to match my old switch with the broken wire.

              After I got to what I thought was fixed, I checked for the connectivity with a multimeter (I stuck the positive and negatives points into the blue box socket of the switch) and verified connectivity for switch right and light green & blue sending a signal together; then for left: blue and black. All beeped only when engaged so that checks out right?

              What else should I check to see if I have correctly fixed the switch?

              Connections from the switch into the headlight bucket:

              My front blinkers have 3 wires - Red, Black and Black/White (which connect from the side frame. I assume they are aftermarket because they do not map the wire diagram. My bike has only sockets for two connections (I think) - black and light green, then black with white tracer.

              Is this correct?
              Left turn signal black wire --> Black wire connector
              Right turn signal black green --> light green wire connector
              Black with White stripe --> Black & White stripe (multiple) connector
              Reds - unplugged.

              Any ideas on what to test now? I'm getting no turn signals at any time, but my headlight/horn/highbeams etc. all work fine.

                  You can make any switch work If you re wire it

                      Agreed - but I'm trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with it first, and other than cleaning the nodes, I'm not sure what to test with a multimeter to see if I have a bad wire or what.
