    Regulator Location?

    this is being posted for my dad, so any answers or further questions i will have to relay to him


    his new bike, a 1982 GS1100G, seems to be missing its regulator. in the pics that i will be linking, you can see two bolts under the battery box, one which has been cut. would that have been the original place for it?

    also, in the album of pics, you can see a burnt-out connection terminal, presumably for the regulator to plug in.

    in another pic is assumed to be the grounding spot, with a terminal leading to nothing, probably where the original regulator was removed from it?

    and in the album of pics is also the new regulator we acquired.

    any confirmation or further info is appreciated!

    You're in a world of hurt there with that electrical system. All the connectors look corroded and damaged.

    It does appear that the R/R is missing. Looks like you purchased a new one, only you could have done better with the selection. At any rate, I strongly advise you to snip off the plastic plug on the R/R, then go find your stator wires and do the same. Wire the Stator directly into the R/R bypassing the factory harness. Make sure the R/R is properly grounded and check for resistance in the R/R positive output line on the way to the battery. The red wire in the factory harness plug dangling loose is for the power output just mentioned. Connect that to your R/R power output wire (red). Heavy duty spade terminals or solder direct. Spend some time and do the job right or you will be doing it again in the near future.

      I wouldn't bother using that R/R - it's undersized and will cause problems. You can get a used Shindengen R/R for $20 that will do a better job or spend $75 to get a very reliable new one. It's not worth the effort to clean up this bike's electrics and use substandard parts.

        did he get ripped off or something?

        and he also bought this stator, is there anything wrong with this one?

          Rick's makes a good stator, but that R/R is just a cheap Chinese shunt R/R. You can get a better quality series R/R for about the same price. Oh well. Most likely it will serve well enough if you wire it into the system properly.
