    Ignition settings GS 500 1979/1980?

I'm having a real hard time with my GS 500 4 cyl. I think the engine is a 1979, since the serialnumber ends with 79.

Anyway, I can't seem to find a manual anywhere.

I rejettet the carbs, because of open filters and different exhaust system.
    The carbs are Mikuni VM22.

It kinda starts ok, but wont go for very long, and as soon as I rev it just a bit, the carbs backfire, and sounds like they're drowning, or gasping for air.

My lst solution would be the ignition, but as I said, I can't find a manual anywhere, to find out how to set the ignition.

    Any good ideas?

You probably got a GS 550(stamped on engine) and since it has VM carbs, it's a 79 (unless PO's have fiddled with it). Head to Basscliff's site for lots of info and maybe a manual like this

    For info overload

How far up on jetting and what brand of pods? What kind of "different exhaust system" ?

      The full serialnumber is GS500 104 079. So I'm pretty sure it's a 500. :-)

      Filters are like this one

The exhaust is a LAZER racing thingy...

I went from 87,5 jets to 100,5 recomended by my local bikemech.

I don't think the GS500, 4 cylinder were marketed in the states. I think it's Europe model and I've only seen a few posted here. One being from Croatia. Can't remember the members name. Kruns is his forum name. Have you checked the basics, carb rebuild, intake leaks (boots & o-rings), valves adjustment? Maybe too much air from intake leaks. I like the 500/4. A rare one in our neck of the woods, Cheers. This site has a little specification info on it http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzu...ki_models.html

Not to many of them in denmark either.

Anyways. I tried spraying diesel start around the carbs, when it's going, and nothing changes, so I think the carbs are airtight.

haven't checkes the valves though. I gotta admit, that I haven't really got the motivation to get it going. I bought it to enjoy the rest of the summer. (Thought it would be a quick fix) And now I found the bike i really want soooo...

Check this link to BassCliffs site. He has many manual PDF files. Maybe the 550 manual may apply to your bike. Generally they are an easy fix to get them going. It's just a matter of finding which easy fix you need. I haven't read of many of the members placing much faith in using the "spray around the intake boots" approach for detecting intake leaks. Wish I could help more.

              You're right about that.

Check the Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature. It will teach you some stuff to look out for including the need to rejet your carbs when changing to pods and a header.

The GS500 is almost identical to the 550. The factory service manual available on Cliff's site for the 550 has info about your bike.
