      The earlier 1100's had the electronics for the Check Panel built into the guages unit just under the picture of the bike panel (Check Panel). It had functions such as indicating if any bulb was blown, the level of the battery acid and the level of the brake fluid, oil pressure etc. If any failed, a light glowed in the location of the fault on the picture of the bike.
      The later models had a separate control unit for that, which is what you have.
      Some of the alarm indications are just simple triggers, but the bulb checking part is a bit more complex and has the power feed wire going in and then out of the box. If there is no current flowing then the electronic circuit switched the warning indicator on. You may need to bridge some of those wires if you just unplug the unit.
