82 GS450-adding digital Tachometer

I want to add a digital tachometer my bike and would like to hear from others on how they've done this.

I'm familiar with the wirewrap approach around the sparkplug wire, but this produces a very noisy signal. Has anyone been successful in tapping into the CDI or the signal coming off the signal generator?

First, be careful. You will be lectured that your bike does not have a CDI, it has an igniter.
Second, the signal from the igniter goes to the coil. That terminal on the coil would be the place to access the signal you require. The terminal that is not the 12V from the electrical system will be the igniter signal. Very simple to do.

I'm running the Acewell digital, wires into the ground line to a Coil. Compared it to the analog tach and it's spot on.

My roommate tried the wirewrap method, very inaccurate and jumped around quite a bit.

Yep, same as Jeff here with the Acewell.

They provide a 10K ohm resistor with the gauge and I used that inline from the negative side of my Dynatek coil, works like a charm.
