gs750 usual charging problems!

Hey Guys, (my bike is a GS750 1977 E)

Usual on and off charging issues... started about 6 months ago... tested the reg/rect and it was faulty. This fixed it fine,

now it doesn't seem to be charging anymore! This is what I have tested so far...

Tested the Reg/Rec and that seems ok... where I should be getting readings i get about 0.428 on each wire...

Tested the AC output from the Stator and that seems ok.. at about 2,000 revs it pumps out 25v and then reved to about 4-5,000 it pumps out about 60...

Tested the Ohms and that does read -1 on every check.... this could be the issue, but it still seems to pump out enough voltage...

Then when I plug everything back together and hook up to the battery it reads DC 12.4 while idle ... and the same when reved to about 3-4,000

Any ideas?!!? why its not charging? the stator is pumping out voltage... the reg/rec seems to be ok... yet when all connected up... it doesnt....

Thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Easier for us if you do this quick test in this link AND report results; make sure your battery is fully charged at start of testing

So you no longer have seperate rectifier and regulator units and have replaced them with a combo R/R ? what type/brand? how many wires?

The open circuit AC test is a unloaded test- your stator might be falling flat when asked to produced load ( i.e.,connected to R/R )

If memory serves this is too low. Go through the Stator Papers diagnostic flow chart and I think it mentions peak AC voltage ( at 5000) on each of the 3 legs should be better than 60v and that each of the legs should be the same.

Now the other thing to look at is the grounds. The stock R/Rs are not grounded well so you can add extras. Tie another line into the stock ground from the R/R (black /white tracer) and attach it directly to the negative battery pole. You can also add one from the body of the R/R to a good clean (metal to metal) point on the frame. Check the other grounds too especially the battery to frame or engine. Good clean metal to metal joins are necessary.

Try running a ground directly from the regulator to the battery, if those numbers you posted are correct , sounds like a grounding issue ,or your red positive wire coming from the regulator going to the fuse box is faulty. You can also run the red wire from the regulator directly to the battery and see if that helps. Have you cleaned up all the connectors on the bike yet?

Hi Guys, Thanks for all the quick responses... I will read through them all and give the suggestions a go...

Haven't cleaned all the connections as yet... so Ill try that also.

Hi I just tried this and it seems to help loads!!!!

Going to recharge the battery on trickle over night and test again... but I just had a question...

If i run the R/R red wire straight to the battery + terminal, is this safe? and also do I still need to run a + wire from the R/R to the fuse board aswell?

Same question goes to the ground wires...
