Dash lights working no other electrics

I recently got a 1981gsx250 and am trying to get it to work. When I connect a battery and turn the key the oil and neutral lights work but I have no indicators, lights and the starter button does not work. I ran the battery direct to the starter motor and it turns over but won't start. Hopefully you guys can help thanks.

Do you have spark at the plugs?

There is a lot to go through.

No spark at plugs when I have the starter motor wired direct to the battery.

check the fuse and or fuses. Check the wiring harness for cuts etc. Check all the connectors as these like to corrode over time.

You will not get a spark connecting direct to the starter you will have to also run a wire to the battery positive original main feed, or just to start, cross any red with any orange but as JR says check your fuses, and earths.

you haven't said anything about the fuses.

you haven't said anything about checking for voltage anywhere.
is difficult to troubleshoot electrical problems with your eyeballs.
need a voltmeter or maybe a tester light probe.

Thanks guys. Going through the wires with a multimeter in the next few days when I get time. Ill let you know how it goes, might still need some help.

Is your handle bar kill switch in the run (on) position, clutch pulled in, when you are trying to start???
