GSX400T 1985 Stator looks weird

I've been reading a lot about the electrical problems on this forum, because I think my rectifier stopped working a while ago (battery won't charge).

Now I've been trying to measure the electrical values, but turns out the wiring of my bike is a bit of a mess. I also discovered that the rectifier on my bike is not the original one, it has no brand or type number on it or anything.

So having difficulties getting correct measurements I decided to take a look at the stator to see if it's burnt, but I didn't see what I had expected. I attached a photo of what I saw when removing the side panel. So can anyone tell me if this is normal? 'Cause I'm thinking, since the rectifier had already been replaced, maybe the stator has been too.

That would be the ignition pickups, the stator is on the other side of the motor.

Hi everyone

I finally had some time to do some tests on my GSX400T today and not sure if the R/R is stil working, 'cause I'm pretty sure the stator is busted. (I'll attach some pictures)

Now can anyone tell me if the gs 450L stator will fit on my GX400T? Or which one will? Same for the R/R ...
It seems hard to find a replacement GSX400T stator.
Or any recomendations about replacement part online shops in europe? 'Cause ordering from the US will cost me an extra on tax ...

I will also redo all of my wiring cause that's a mess too.

Electrosport does a pretty good job of cross indexing parts.

You obviously need a Series R/R otherwise that same thing is going to happen again.

I am no expert but that stator looks cooked. I would replace it regarless of it testing good or not.

Roast y toasty from a R/R allowing too much voltage. You need both stator and R/R. A series R/R for sure to protect your new stator.

PM member Steve- he sells rewound stators and can tell you if he has your size- should be same as 450.
Summer is BBQ time- even for stators!

I'm finding most of the parts for my bike, but it's confusing cause most of the aftermarket parts don't have a brand name, so I don't know if these are of good quality. I don't want to risk burning another stator and R/R. Also I find no info about the R/R's being shunt or series (and I should have a series right?).

I've found one listing for an 'Electrex' stator, these any good?
For the R/R. Should I risk going for an 'no name' kind? Or is there a bg risk of cooking the stator again?

Any of the "no-name" regulators will be the shunt-type that you want to avoid, if possible.

Not sure what you have available over there, but here, our favorites are one model of the Compufire regulator series and one model from the Polaris recreational vehicle line-up.

The two most popular series models are the Compu-Fire 55402 and the Shindengen SH-775 Polaris part number 4012941. And no, just about everyone out there sells the old shunt type just because that's what the bike had 30 years ago. PM Steve on the forum for a quality rewound stator. No one makes the stator cores, they are all rewound products as far as I know. Polaris has dealers in most of Europe.

Sorry for the stupid questions... just don't want to waste money, and when I look for polaris I only find OEM parts which are expensive, or parts for ATV's and stuff.

That's because it was only 6,50. When you buy tings that are up to 100 or 200 $, they ad about 30% extra. Really sucks!
