Installing upgraded R/R on GS425

Hi all,

So I've read a lot of the posts on the matter although I had a few questions on installing the SH775 onto my bike. I took a look at it today and the old R/R only has 2 wires that attach directly to the stator. There are 2 more wires (one red, one red/white) that connect to the harness, and the third stator wire comes out of the harness. When I install the new R/R, I have the three wires that go to the stator, but do I leave the last one in the harness untouched? As for the red and red/white wire, what am I doing with those?

The setup so far. The wire hanging out the bottom of the picture is the old R/R. You can see the two yellow wires exiting to the stator and the two red wires entering the harness.

Hook the (3) stator wires up directly to the R/R.

That means the three stator wires go to the three stator inputs on the R/R .

That means find the 3 wires coming from the stator not from the harness.

That means it doesn't matter what wire there are coming from the harness; Ignore them!!!!

You probably wont understand the harness anyway, and you don't need to understand.

If you want to understand go reread the multitude of descriptions "again".

Yeah ... I've got the 3 stator wires part. I was most curious about the leftover wire hanging from the harness and distinguishing between the red and red/white. Guess you answered the former. Leave it.

You hook the r/r(+) to the 16ga red in the harness. The r/r(-) is hooked to ground. Both of these things have been described and debated at length and starting an opinion poll here is unlikely to yield any different answers. If you want my opinion read the links in my signature. Ah. thank you. I am not trying to be intentionally dense - I have read everything on the topic before posting. I have never once attempted anything electrical in my life and would prefer to double check on all of this and remain unshocked. I've reviewed the diagrams but clearly need to educate myself more on the matter as I am totally lost. The instructions on the site don't pertain exactly to the 425, but generally higher CC bikes with slightly different charging systems, furthering my own confusion.

Some remaining questions:

R/R (-) hooked to ground. Can that be the same ground at the starter? Since I have two R/R (-), can I also hook one up to (-) terminal on battery? Would this make a difference?

Also have two (+) on R/R. I have read that to hook directly to the battery I would need a (20amp?) fuse. Would there be any advantage to hooking to the battery (+) as well since I have two (+) leads from the R/R?

Lol ... I know. I am embarrassed to be so ignorant but I'm doing my best to learn.

Sorry I remember being a bit confused for a while with the exact same issue( first time I swapped out a stator) .And the answer is just as simple as I stated. Ignore the spare wires.

You mean your old R/R had two (+) leads??? ok, but the SH-775 only has one.

Sh775 has two brown (+) wires.

EDIT: The TRIUMPH harness attached to the SH775 has two brown (+) wires. Oops.

It does? mine doesn't-are you using some fancy connector to connect to the (+) spade on the Sh-775?

If the SH775 has two + then one is a sense wire (the middle one) and can be ignored. I installed a different model Shindengen that had that & on testing leaving it disconnected made no difference.

The wire Posplayr is telling you to ignore goes to the headlight switch (if you have one - on/off not dip/main) & was to turn off a leg of the stator when the headlight was off.
In 1980 it became law to have it on - the switch was done away with but Suzuki left the old wire there.

Evidently he is using the Triumph leads.

In that setup, the R/R + does come out to two separated brown wires and the R/R - does come out to two separate black wires.

Connect either or both of the brown wires to the red wire in the bike's harness, connect either or both of the black wires to a ground point. It does not matter if it is the chassis or the negative post of the battery, electrically, they should all be the "same point".

By the way, the "ground at the starter" is your engine crankcase. Yeah, there is another large wire that connects the crankcase to the battery, but the starter itself 'grounds' to the engine.

There's no sense wire on SH-775 -at least the one made by Shindengen!

There really has to be an easier way to do this and is quite frustrating when the most common approach to not understanding simple and straight forward explanations is to ignore those explanations. I can't help but think that focusing on specific questions to specific figures would not trips much more understanding much quicker than any self styled process of investigation for which the investigator is completely under qualified to purse.


I know it is fundamentally against the male psyche to do , but when all else fails read the manual. Better yet get your wives to help at least they will read the documentation.

The investigator is, admittedly, completely under qualified. The boards were designed for people to share their knowledge. I haven't ignored anything. Steve, you are absolutely correct. Should've mentioned I am using the triumph harness.


The stator wires spliced, crimped, completed.


2 (+) from triumph connected to the (+) of the bike. You can also see the red/white hanging and the white/green hanging. I will cap these off.
