    Gs650gl ignitor

I was just wondering what gs ignitors were compatible with the gs650gl, and would a dyna s ignition work with stock coils?

Hey look, someone from Maine! Anyways, yes, the stock coils work fine with the dyna s. But the stock ignitor is very durable ( I've tested 5 and all worked perfectly)- are you having ignition problems, or?????

I have no spark on 2 and 3. I know the coil is good and the signal generator coil checked out ok. Just some back story. I had the bike running and was going to go through the charging system, when the bike quit. I did find that my r/r was bad so I figured that it had fried the ignitor.

So the signal coils tested out ok, but did you clean the connections from them to ignitor and from ignitor to the ignition coils ? Try switching the the connections around (at ignition coils) and see if now #1 and #4 don't spark.

Did you do Mr. Matchless' testing?

yup, done it all. one thing I did that was unorthodox saw to take a butane torch to back of the ignitor to maybe try to reflow the soldier. When it cooled down I gave it another try and wouldn't you know it was working. but then when I put everything back in the bike and gave it another try, nothing. Also there was a new r/r in the bike at this time. But I don't believe that has anything to do with the spark.

Just going off the top of my memory here, but seem to remember the 650G engine has an oil pressure sensor just behind the signal generator plate and the Dyna S won't clear. The plate can be relieved though. The 650 ignitor may have different connectors compared to some other GS bikes, but the device should function similar to other ignitors that work in conjunction with a mechanical spark advance. If you can find a good ignitor for cheap enough, it would be a worthwhile experiment to see if the connector can be adapted for your bike.

I admire creativity, but the electronics inside ignitor probably felt differently as they don't like much heat. Which part of Maine are you trying to burn down?

I'm in Greenbush, About 15 mile north of Old Town.

Thanks for the input Nessism. I've found the same to be true with cdi's. I had and 87 250x with a bad cdi, swapped in on from my xl650r(of course with some moving around of wires in the plug) an it worked great.

Just to be clear, I was referring to Suzuki GS ignitors. Starting in 1980 all GS's went to electronic ignition. Some of the later model GS's added spark advance into the ignitor themselves, so those should be excluded though.
