trouble setting points ^78 1000 ???

motor sitting on bench. i set point gap but cannot get points to close within the timing adjustment range. pretty sure i am doing it right cuz i have done this several times before.

i thought the advancer cam was worn but it measures the same size as running bikes.

any thoughts?

Are these a new set of points?

i may have worked it out. i cheated. i put the points on the highest part of the lobe and adjusted them until they just closed. then i set the actual timing. will not know if that works until i put the motor on the bike.

the only thing i can think of is my book says .3 to .4 mm gap while the link above says .014 inch. gotta find out if that is the same.

.4 mm is .016 inch

.................. hi if you were inclined you could put a pampco pete ignition on and forget points regards oldgrumpy
