82 gs850gl ignitor confusion

Hello all,

so a few days ago I asked a question about how to wire my bike for points. it was explained to me that my bike did not have points and had a ignitor unit.

After doing some more reading everything that was said appeared to be correct.

However; call me stupid but the dang thing sure looks to have points to me.

here is a pic of my setup of the "TWO" black and white wires running down from the coils;

Those are points arent they? They dont look like the pickup sensor's tyically associated with the ignitor units...

is it possible to retro fit a points assembly to a bike that previously had a ignitor unit installed?

This bike DID run before I tore it down and I do not remember ever seeing a ignitor unit box....

We can't tell if those are points unless we know what kind of bike and if you checked your grounds. Please try and have some appreciation for all the help your getting!!!

lol thanks brother! I am very much appreciative for all the help I reveice around here as well. It is really confusing when documentation and knowledged folk tell me one thing and the damned bike tells me another......... off to figure out the wiring options.

After clicking on the link in your sig, I see that the points are just another of the "interesting" differences about your bike.

Although the frame is, indeed, an '82, the front wheel is from '81 or earlier.

The front turn signals are from '80 or earlier.

Can't see any pictures of the carbs or the intake ports on the head, so can't tell if it might be a '79 engine transplanted into the newer frame.

Those are indeed points. Can you post the engine's serial number? Welcome to the world of Frankenstein bikes.

I was the one that told you your bike did not have points. You then deleted the thread.
To be more accurate, I should have stated that your bike did not come from the factory with points.
Someone has replaced your signal generator with a set of points.
Does your engine have a kickstarter?

The engine is a 1982.

In my pea-pickin' little mind, it would be far easier, quicker and cheaper to get another ignitor.

To convert back to points you have to do a considerable amount of re-wiring.

You are correct, there is no kicker.

Rustybronco was correct in saying it is, indeed, an '82. Anything earlier would have the hump at the back of the clutch cover where the kicker used to be (unless it were a '79, in which case the kicker would still be there), and anything later would have a black engine.

Man you guys are fast. I deleted the thread because I thought it was a stupid question; that was until it wasnt....

Beyond wiring is there any other changes that were necessary to make the transition back to points? I am just thinking about the possibility of having to add the mechanical advance back into the loop of things.

I can get the serial number for you fellows this evening. the engine was definitely not black as you guys can see. no kick starter either.

Your bike should have came with a mechanical advancer.

Get the P/N off the black box located behind the rear master cylinders banjo bolt.

while were on the subject of mechanical advancer's. have you guys ever had to replace the springs?
