Can a 1.5 amp charger charge a fully discharged battery ? I've had it on two days now......

Hmm.... That's interesting. The battery was less than a week old and been discharged by a charging problem. { 11.69 volts no matter what the revs } It has set in the bike for 2 months since and brought up for charging 2days ago. I did not check its voltage at that time...Comment

I believe the trickle chargers have problems with batteries that are totally discharged. You might want to start it on a larger charger and then switch over to the trickle charger when it has a bit of a charge. An automotive battery might do the same thing (without the vehicle running).Comment

Yes, of course. My 1100E has a 12Ah battery so a 1.5A charger would completely top it up in approximately 8 hours.
+1. If the battery hasn't come up significantly in just a few hours it is likely toast.
Leaving a battery sitting in a completely discharged state is a recipe for a permanently dead battery. Does your charger offer a de-sulfating mode? Sometimes that will bring a dead one back, but its a crap shoot at best.

I'll try switching it over to my 6 amp charger for an hour and then switch over to the 1.5 amp. Yes it does have a de-sulphate mode. I spent a little more to get that and auto switch to a lower setting { .75 amp I think } so it can also be used as a maintainer.Comment

Just to give a little more detail.. When the original incident happened { about 5 miles from home } a friend charged it up so I could make it home. About a block away the tachometer and lights failed and the bike died in the driveway at my place and I coasted down to my parking spot. So I imagine it was pretty drained. I haven't troubleshooted the charging problem yet other than the quick charge test we did at the time. So it could be a wiring problem. I hope not as just replacing the alternator { 88 Kat } is an easy bolt on solution. I got one on Ebay for a hundred bucks { $1000 new } Stator or r/r replacement involves taking the alternator apart which looks like a PIA to me.....Comment

A little update. I put the battery on my 6 amp charger for an hour and a half. Then I switched to the 1.5 amp charger where the red light was still on. 5 or 6 hours later the green light was on indicating full charge so all is good. Thanks guys.....Comment

Just for giggles I grabbed the old battery I had replaced before I realized I had charging problems and stuck it on the 1.5 amp charger. It had not been completely discharged from running the bike on it's own like the new one was, but had been sitting for three months, Sixteen hours and fully charged. Now I'm wondering how to preserve it, or if it's even possible til my next battery change ? I suspect I can't. On another note I was thinking of buying a load tester. Does anyone know anything about them ? This one on ebay has caught my eye. Opinions ?

If you get that tester, please be sure to stand behind a blast shield when you test your battery.
I don't know about any specific recommendations regarding load vs battery capacity, but putting a 500 amp load on a motorcycle battery will fry it for sure.
I have a 100 amp load that I use very sparingly. I got that one when my 50 amp load died and I could not find a direct replacement.
THIS ONE will do you MUCH better.
And, ... so you don't lose your GSR membership card, it's cheaper, too.
