Unknown wire in connector

1981 GS 850G

Replaced a bad connector under the tank, the largest one there, a 9-pin connector. There is a WHITE wire going in from the main harness (see 2 images, I marked it. Both images are from the end of the connector that faced the REAR of the bike.)

While it goes in, there is no connection on the other end, just an empty hole.

My Haynes manual, with the nice color coded wiring diagram does not show a white wire at or near this connection, all other wires are accounted for. The Suzuki manual is even less clear, at least for me, to understand.

The bike has run quite well for 13+ years, for me, even tho the old plug looked this bad and in reality was worse.

Still doing work on carbs etc but will be starting up soon. Nice new connections from the Vintage Connections set, triple checked that the correct wire matches were made.

Does anyone know what this wire is???? Can't believe it was set up at factory like this but never seemed to be missing anything electrical either.

Is there a better color wiring diagram somewhere other than the Haynes one I have?

White wire should be the headlamp low beam switched ground and the orange/red is the positive voltage supply for the turn signal.

Thanks, not sure purpose of that white one. All lighting works fine. Maybe a P.O. pulled it out & bypassed the switch. I will leave it wired in to nowheresville in the new connector then. The orange red I had indicated just as a reference, it is hooked up to the correct wires on the other side.

This might have a fairly simple explanation.

Some markets (like Europe and Australia) have RH handlebar switches with lights on-off, while other markets (like the USA) have "always on" headlights. On your bike the white wire is a dead-end because (I'm guessing) your RH handlebar switch has no on-off light switch.

Great, that makes so much sense. I have installed my own on/off switch on the Windjammer for use when doing work on the bike or for starting if battery felt weak. When I had my 1977 GT500 it had a factory disabled on/off switch which could be re-abled by filing off the tab they had added to the older version of the switch. The next year or so I believe those on/off switches disappeared completely.

Thanks for your reply. My wiring fixes were done right as I had Roadkill out yesterday for trial run. Still need to tweak carbs & replace leaking fork seals but elec system is fine.
