GS1000S dash surround - mystery hole?

Greetings all,

I've got a 1979 GS1000S that has the full dash surround. On the right hand side there is a hole about 10mm in diameter. I've seen photos where that hole is used to mount a toggle switch for whatever.... and coincidentally (?) there are 2 red wires coming out of the back of the instrument wiring loom that head off to the vicinity of the mystery hole.

At the moment the hole has a rubber bung in it from a previous owner. What is its' original purpose?

The OEM wiring diagram shows something called "Lock Switch" on or near the dash. It's supply appears to come from the battery (or near enough), and it is wired to the clock. What is the Lock Switch for?

It is to turn the clock OFF when you are not riding the bike.

Technology was a bit limited back then, the clock actually drew enough power to drain the battery.

I did just this. Bought the flashing light thingie from a UK ebay seller but it's never worked properly. Shows charging problems almost all the time, but my charging system is fine. I've got the light driving straight off the battery, via a relay, but still no dice. Great idea in theory, but it's been a bust in the real world, on my bike anyway.

This is so easy to do... All you need is a LED and a Zener diode. I wired mine in headlight bucket to power on with ignition. I found with my particular led that 11 volt Zener was perfect for the connection at switch. No light till slightly above idle ,then light stays solid green meaning you got charging. This is a backup system in case my Chinese onboard voltmeter reports odd voltages-cheap insurance!
For me, a light that turns "on"in event of no charging wouldn't inspire much confidence, cuz you could have a connection problem strike you as you ride.
