Will this location work for SH775 R/R?

I think I can fit the SH775 R/R on my 750 by squeezing it in the old spot where my OEM R/R was as long as I add a small bracket on the backside for the right hand screw. My questions are these:

    1) The left hand side of the R/R sits right against the mounting bolt for the fuse box. Would this cause any problems?
    2) The R/R also sits on a cross piece of the frame. You can just see it at the bottom of the R/R. Will this cause any problems? I think I can raise it up to get it just off of this cross piece of the frame. Would that be the better choice... off the frame as opposed to sitting on the frame?

This is my '82 GS750E bike. Thanks

That's a marvelous spot- no problem. It don't matter if r/r touches frame as long as it doesn't bounce against it.

If it is touching how pray tell does it stop from bouncing off it continually?

I would want a minimum of 1/8" clearance to the frame. 1/4" would be better. Grind off the fins(a bit) in that area a bit to gain the clearance.

The fusebox screw is not an issue as the R/R and fusebox are all mounted to the side plate as a unity that moves together.

Is your SPG on the negative battery terminal? I cant see it here. The black wire going to the right solenoid mounting bolt seems to be a single.

I also spy something white on the solenoid bolts.... Is that dielectric grease or something else?

        Ok, good to know.

So there won't be any issues with it touching the mounting bolt of the fuse box? Electronics is not my strong suit and just want to make sure there's no current or anything that would interfere with the fuse box.

Hey Posplayr. Right now it's not all hooked up. I was just checking the fitting of the SH775 so the wires might look a little screwed up.

By the way, I need to thank you for helping with my starter issue I had. It turned out that even though the ground wire for the solenoid was a separate wire with ring connectors on both ends, it wasn't doing the job. So I made a better one and it solved the starting issues. Also, your insistence on doing a quick test on the charging system uncovered my bad R/R. Thus, I'm installing the SH775.

And the tops of the starter solenoid bolts do need a little cleaning. Thanks for the help.

If it's mounted securely it won't bounce against frame. Mine is happily bolted to rear tank support -one bolt- hasn't moved despite the pitiful roads I enjoy riding on!

Thanks Tom203. I'll be fabricating something up here in a day or two. Despite all my efforts, this seems to be the only place I can put it. My 82 750 has a huge air filter box that sits right above the battery. A real pain as I have to take it out every time I have to work on electrics or the battery.

Once you sort out your connections, and have the SH-775' you won't need to fiddle with electrical stuff much!

The SH775 is securely mounted to a plate mounted in rubber that moves to minimize vibration propagation to the electronics plate by allowing relative motion between the plate and the frame. Do you know how much it moves? If it is more than the clearance allowed it will keep banging against the frame.

I mounted my Compufire RR in the same stock location. I had trim down a couple of the cooling fins a bit to clear that part of the frame.

Posplayr.... there is almost zero room for it to move. It is basically sandwiched in there pretty tight. I will be sure to keep it off the frame though as there is just enough room to fit it in.

Mrbill5491... I really didn't want to have to trim it down any and luckily I don't think I'll have to. A few holes drilled in the mounting plate and a piece of metal to go out just past the plate to screw the right hand bolt into and I should be good to go.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I just always like to make sure of what I'm doing before I do it. This is an awesome site.

I mounted my R/R on my 81 750E in the same location. Mine's upside-down, however, because I didn't buy special connectors and didn't bother potting the spade terminals.

I put my 775 in the ignitor's stock location on the right side of the battery box and moved the ignitor to where the r/r was. Works great as the bolt hole spacing of the ignitor and 775 are the same.
