Ignition / ignitor problem

Hi all! So my 82 GS650L which has been running great when and stopped running a few weeks ago as it likes to do from time to time. I thought that i had isolated to the problem to the coils.. no issue as I wanted to put a set of Accel super coils on it anyway. So the coils come and I'm still having problems. So now I'm fairly certain that using the different ignition systems tests in the Clymer manual I've identified the ignitor as the source of the problem.

All that being said, I have a couple of questions: (1) has anyone dealt with this kind of issue before and have any general advice? (2) At the moment I have a friend who is selling a (really really rough shape) 78' GS750, pretty much just for parts, does anyone know if that ignitor from that bike would work on the 82 650? (3) If not, I was able to find some for the 82 on ebay.. but theyre pricey.. does anyone have one, or know a good source for one? And finally, (4), if I were able to get the 78' 750 to part it out, would anyone be interested in parts off that bike?? ( I know this isn't the right section for that question, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway.

Somehow, this time-to-time stuff doesn't strike me as running great. Maybe your ignitor is overheating- what's the primary resistance of these Accel coils? The stock ignitor probably won't be happy with 3 ohm coils but I don't really know.Did you test the ignitions coils, or just wanted to go with the Accel units?

Typical solution is to get a dyna system which replaces the signal coils and the ignitor- about $125

Thanks Tom.. Yeah, maybe great is a little bit of an overstatement... but it has been running well. The primary resistance of the new coils are 3 ohms. Could the Accel coils work with the dyna ignition system? I've done a little reading on the dyna systems, however, if you would be willing to elaborate on it for me I would really appreciate it.

If you have looked into the dyna stuff, you've probably noticed that dyna also sells ignition coils which happen to be 3 ohm units.I imagine the Accel would work fine with the dyna ignition.

The 78 gs750 came stock with points ignition, so no good for the gs650.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate the help! So one last question here, on the bike there is a signal generator and ignitor.. When I tested the signal generator is was fine, and the ignitor is what is causing problems. However the Dyna system would replace both the signal generator and ignitor in one unit, correct?

Yes, because the dyna unit incorporates the signal generator and ignitor into one contained unit. I'm looking into doing a dyna myself since i put dyna 3.0 ohm coils while troubleshooting my ignition problems and ended up building a diy ignitor. The 3.0 ohm coils are over working the diy and are causing it to overheat and causes running problems. I wouldn't trust ebay ignitors. I have bought 2 ignitors and have found neither worked. The first did the same thing as my original, only sparking on 2 cylinders, the other makes no spark at all.

Yes, the dyna does. But the dyna plate needs slight modification to clear oil sending unit on the 650.

did you clean the electrical plug that connects the signal coils to ignitor? The current from signal coils is tiny.

I have tested 5 of these 650 ignitors (from parts lots and ebay) on my bike and they all worked- half hour ride and reving past 8000 rpms. I suspect a high voltage charging condition could fry them, but they seem reliable.

Tom, what kind of modification does the dyna unit require? Some minor filing or something more involved?

It seems like by the time I buy a used ignitor on ebay for $100+ i might as well go ahead and get a dyna system. Especially if its questionable if it will work or not.

Tom, i'm just recounting my experiences so far with used parts. Perhaps i'm just one of those that just gets the bad parts

Just to check with someone who knows the dyna S systems, the correct model for an '82 GS650 would be the DS2-2, right?

I did see that.. it seems that the year stops at 81, and it doesnt mention the 650, it skips from 550 to 750.

I was thinking it would be this one:

Although its documents mention kawasaki bikes specifically. I cant seem to find a very straight answer as to which model it should be. I sent an email to Dyna's customer service, but havent heard back yet.

That unit that you linked to is probably for the kawasaki 4's. Probably has different rotor - get the unit at the Z1 link.

If you talk to dyna, they will tell you that it won't work for the 650 because of interference with oil sender- I doubt they will tell you to modify their plate to fit. Many 650 owners have gone this route. Someone recently posted the cutout needed to make it fit, but my search skills on here are poor. Hopefully someone will chime in with that picture and explanation.
it stops at 81 models, cuz suzuki eliminated mechanical advance gizmo on most 82 models and up. The dyna needs the mechanical advance, but all the 650's had the mechanical advance behind signal coils.

Ok, great. Thank you Tom. So to make sure I have this straight... the DS3-2 will work with the 82 650 with a modified plate to make room for the oil sender. The dyna needs the mechanical advance, which is behind the signal generator, which IS on the 82, even though suzuki eliminated it on most 82 models? If anyone has the information on modifications to the dyna unit that would be most excellent and helpful. I'm trying to get in touch with dyna to ask them about it, but I haven't had any luck getting through to them.
