GS1100GL 1982 - Turn signal, (Indicator) Problems

Hi all,

I had a major problem on the way to work that meant by the time I got to my works the battery was nearly flat. Whilst at work I charged the battery. On the way home I noticed that the indicators were lit permenantly when operated by the control switch. By the time I got home all the indicator bulb filliaments were blown. I then replaced the stator and the regulator to sort the charging problem out and that side of it is now fine. the problem is the indicators have been completely dead ever since. I swapped the flasher relay out but still nothing. the self-cancelling has never worked so that module with all the wires coming out of it, how does it work? can it be bypassed? Can someone describe to me how to do it? What else can I check?

Sure sounds like your previous charging issue damaged the module or its wiring... Have a look at this diagram to see how to bypass it

Thanks for diagram. So how does it work? Am I reading it correctly that the flasher relay is grounded via the TSCU thingy? So if I ground that side of the flasher relay it takes the TSCU out of the circuit?

Hi again,

I have disconnected the TSCU from the harness. How do I wire up what is left? There was a lot of wires coming from/ to that control unit?

The stock TSCU pulls a stock flasher relay High. Depending upon the flasher you buy (see this link), the flasher replay has to be grounded. That is what the TSCU mod is about; getting the correct polarity of the flasher control wire. There are also two wire flashers if you never plan to have the TSCU working again.

The self cancelling have never worked since I have had the bike. The OEM Flasher relay has been replaced, by others, at some point, with a Halfords 3 pin HFU209 unit. This set-up worked until my electrical overload problem. I just wondered if I could bypass the whole TSCU thing completely without too much fuss. It is a second generation one with a single plug and an odd sepeate wire. I have tested the handlebar switch and that is fine. Any ideas?

Apparently your flasher is fired(because you have no TSCU and nothing else controls the signal other than the switch).

As mentioned here, the simplest thing is to plug in a two pronged flasher. It only goes in 2 ways. Is the solution any more complicated than that?

I have a stock relay and TSCU available.
If you have power into the relay then it is fried as Jim mentioned.

Jump the plug contacts where the two prong relay fits and see if the lights light up. Do this with the turn signal on left or right.

Hi all, an update to my turn signal problem.

I put back the TSCU back with a replaced connector block as it all fell apart when I disconnected it!

I jumped the 3 prong connector block as suggested, and got the lights to light left and right correctly. I bought a standard 3 prong flasher relay from an auto store and plugged it in. It still doesn't flash or light up at all. I can feel the relay energising when I plug it in, but no flash.
