    GS700ES w 4800 miles Quick Test

    Idle: 13.75
    2500 14.99
    5000 15.83

    Bad R/R?
What type did they have on this bike? It's a keeper so Compu-fire? How much could I ride it before bad things happen?

15.83 is pretty high (too high). Are you sure your voltmeter is good?

If so, then you probably need a new RR.
    Current:
Z1300A5 Locomotive (swapped my Intruder for it), GS450 Cafe Project (might never finish it....), XT500 Commuter (I know - it's a Yamaha )

    Past:
    VL1500 Intruder (swapped for Z1300), ZX9R Streetfighter (lets face it - too fast....), 1984 GSX750EF, 1984 GSX1100EF (AKA GS1150)
And a bunch of other crap Yamahas....

R/r is probably only as bad as it was coming from the factory. The newer r/r s regulate better than that. If you are going to keep it then I would suggest a series r/r.

Yea that's what I figured. Voltmeter is good. Been using it to diagnose and repair my other bike which we just got dialed in.

Do you think it would hurt anything if I put a few hundred miles on it before I get the new R/R?

I would NOT ride the bike that way. The voltage will damage your battery and might even fry the ignitor. There are a lot of that vintage GS bikes with damaged ignitors and the parts are getting hard to come by.

And get a Shindengen SH775 w/harness adapter from Triumph. Check the archives for more information.

I would not do it. You stress parts you are reducing their lifetime even if it all seems to work. You should absolutely not be over 15.0v and if your meter is right you are way over that.

you could ride 400 miles but you are still stressing the other electrical stuff as Ed is saying.

I've read a fair number of threads with reference to the Shindengen SH775 but have not seen anything about the adapter from Triumph. I'll start searching buy why that particular adapter?

Triumph use an R/R with the same body as the SH775. They have a nice factory made harness that plugs into the sockets properly and gives you pigtails to connect to, all for around $10. The alternative is to individually connect to the blade connectors in the SH775 sockets with wires and then pot the sockets with silicone or whatever to waterproof and secure everything. For the money, the Triumph harness is the cleanest, highest quality, most secure way to connect the SH775 to your bike's wiring harness. The only downside is it is somewhat bulky and makes mounting the SH775 a bit trickier.

                    My $0.02, YMMV.

Thank you. The R/R is mounted horizontally on the GS700ES with the connectors pointing inward so maybe it won't be such a chore making it fit.
