OK, have tank off and fuel gauge sending unit out. All is clear. On BikeCliff's site there are three varieties of GS1000 service manual. I have downloaded ALL and none seem to have the GS1000G supplement. Only place I can find it is on eBay and some guy wants $20 for TWELVE reproduced pages!!! The issue I am having is that the resistance values I can find are for the models with the smallest tanks. There is a set screw on the wiper that can be loosened and the wiper moved slightly (after all has been cleaned) to get the resistance values approximately. At the low end the manual says .4 gallons is 110 Ohms resistance. Great. The upper end resistance value is limited to the 4.3 gallon tank on the non-G models at 3 Ohms. Will it show the same 3 Ohms for a 5.8 gallon tank?
Can someone with an actual G manual that shows the various resistance values vs capacity please post those values? I think I have this thing almost whipped...
The float and sending unit were a bit rusty and the coil was oxidized as was the brass (I guess) wiper. I was also worried about the insulation which had deteriorated and the wire was touching the locating tab just before it turns to the solder point on the back (other side is where the yellow/black wire comes off). I unsoldered the wire and removed the last flakes of fabric insulation and drilled the hole where the wire comes through to accept a piece of heat shrink and straightened the wire out and put heat shrink over it and then put it back in placed and resoldered. It is pretty solid now and the thing seems to work.
Last "tip" is that the wiper can be repositioned on the wiper arm. I loosened the set screw (M3 x 6 .5 pitch) so that it contacts the coils thing more closely. It did NOT contact the coil very well all through its stroke.
Again, resistance values for the 5.8 gal. tank would be much appreciated!
