Alternative to the SH775 RR

We see these questions so often, "...why should I do the exact same as what everybody else if doing, knowing full well it works?"
I'm not going to say these are stupid, questions because they are not. The issue is who should answer the question? This is because in reality the question is
" can somebody explain why the common knowledge is wrong?"
Now I ask myself the exact same thing constantly, the difference is I can usually find the answer without asking anybody the question but rather just reading. -
Ebay: Search "polaris RZR regulator". You will find tons of used SH775's for about $40 shipped. At that price point there is no good reason to use anything else.Leave a comment:

The limiting factor is the stator. It is only capable of outputting so many watts. You can improve the R/R but it will do little to improve the output of the stator.but I was thinking something off a touring bike since they can handle more loads than what's on my bike (1982 GS850L)Leave a comment:

Most here are pretty pleased with their fancy 775s and you can research why but to answer your question,I was wondering if anybody has tried a R/R from a later model motorcycle. The reason I am asking this there is a motorcycle salvage yard going out of business close to me, and one of the things they advertised was R/R's for a cheap price. Just curious if going this route can cause more problems than benefits. I'm not sure what kind of bike to look for, but I was thinking something off a touring bike since they can handle more loads than what's on my bike (1982 GS850L).
Sure. Its pretty easy to adapt them.( Edit: unless they are field coil regulation type...look for one used on 3 phase PermanentMagnet generators like ours..)
...They often have an extra sense wire. Best to Put this on the key-switched or some other circuit that reflects the main battery voltage pretty well( not the headlamp circuit as an example) ..ie best if not directly on battery, though it'll work...
I don't llike things that run hot so put your hand on the funky R/R while running it a bit...if Very hot, try to keep it cool out in the breeze and it might last longer.Last edited by Gorminrider; 03-17-2017, 10:37 AM.Leave a comment:

Guest repliedI got my SH775 used on eBay from a guy/place that sells parts stripped from Polaris machines.
We know the SH775 works great, why risk something else? Mine system (with a new stator) actually charges the battery at idle and works great.Leave a comment:
