Compufire R/R wiring

Hi All.

I have a longish ride, 2800km return trip coming up on the old GS1000S and I am doing all I can to make sure she will be reliable. Top of the list is electrical and ensuring I have a reliable charging system. After reading all the recommendations here I have invested in a Compufire series R/R and a Ricks stator winding. (Along with brakes, LED headlight, tyres, chain and sprockets etc etc)

Now it comes to wiring, and I see that the original wiring runs one phase of the 3 phase alternator through the headlight switch and the other two phases go direct to the R/R. My question is: Can I just hook up all 3 phases directly to the R/R or do I still go through the headlight wiring?

Bypass all that old wiring and send the stator wires directly into the R/R. Take the R/R ground direct to the battery and the power output should go to the fusebox. Be sure to check resistance in the power feed route; put one probe of your voltmeter on your + out wire at the R/R and the other on the + terminal of the battery. If you get more than .3 volts you have too much resistance in that line and the connectors should be cleaned.

0.3v is high and most people that I recall reporting ground voltage drops are under 0.05v when they use a SPG.

0.05V for grounds is hardly a pipe dream unless you directly connect your R/R(-) to the battery.

Not talking about grounds. Talking about the power wire from R/R through the fusebox and over to the battery. I advised him to run the R/R ground straight to the battery.

All installed and working. Thanks for the help. I wired the 3 phases directly to the Compufire (Once I had bought the extra terminals that Amazon don't supply, Grrrr) then the output directly to the battery via a fuse on the positive feed. Works well. I have also fitted a Lithium battery and it is amazing. Just doesn't drain when the bike is idle. The threads here have helped understand charging systems big time, and I can see why my stator wires have been a little hot in the past. Hopefully that is all behind me now!
