best place online to buy suzuki parts?

    Hi everyone,

I am happy to have stumbled upon this forum as I am a new motorcycle owner and have been having trouble finding parts for my 1981 Suzuki GS400. I have been trying to find a new ignition coil as one has failed. Any advice as to what kind of ignition coil to purchase? new? used? aftermarket? as well as where to purchase online. Thank you for any advice that people may have. I also have never been a member of a forum before and don't know how any of this works.

Welcome ...ignition coils are very durable while the rest of the ignition system is suspect. Bad coil? Like smoked,or broken wires? Probably find a good used one at junkyard or eBay . Is this the style coil that you have?

I have full battery voltage up to the ignition coil and tested the coil separately with a multimeter, and the coil is bad. The bike seems to be hard to find parts for. It says gs40x on the crank case but can't seem to find an ignition coil for a 1981 gs400. Is there any aftermarket options?

        Welcome aboard.
I hadn't been a member of any forum before joining this one either. It takes a little getting used to but poke around in the different forums and you'll get the hang of it in no time.
Sorry I can't offer much in the area of electrical issues. I just wanted to welcome you and post a link to some great info.

Ok...so this is a twin with two ignition coils ? If so, What's the primary ohms read on the good coil? Lots of aftermarket coils out there but you need to get a similar ohm unit. Is your good coil about 5 ohms? A point/condenser setup won't tolerate too low a primary ohms. Aftermarket coils might have different mounting method

This is a twin with two ignition coils? If so, just get an ignition coil with the proper primary/secondary resistance (primary resistance should be around 5 ohms, secondary around 10k I believe), the single output aftermarket ignition coils are fairly inexpensive and I'd bet you can find one with mounting holes that match your stock setup. Aftermarket should be around $25 for what you need. I have used EMGO brand coils to good effect in the past, put 30k miles on one before I sold the bike.

              Hi Joe, Welcome to TheGSR.

I dont have any expereince with the twins.
But I can say you are not going to want to get a new replacement stock coil from any supplier. Will be terrible expensive.

Coils are usually quite reliable, so a used one from ebay should do.
I cant say all what other models will use the same coil, but I can say coils for mechanical breaker point and condensers are different than ones for electronic ignition (biggest difference being the primary resistance, 3 ohm verse 5 ohm or something like that).

Do post an introduction in the owners section.
Do go to your profile and add a comment for the signature line about what year/model you have. That will then appear in every post you make so folks know what bike you are talking about.

One reason you are not finding much is because that 400 was not available in the US, where most of the online vendors are.

As others have suggested, look into the very inexpensive (cheap ) EMGO coils on eBay, but be sure to get coils of the proper resistance on the primary windings. You can also look into better (more expensive) coils from Dynatek, but they are still likely cheaper than stock coils.

Your bike probably has electronic ignition, which started on most Suzuki models in 1980. Most of the coils for those bikes are specified at 3-4 ohms. Don't forget that when you get down to resistances that low, your meter leads make a difference.
