    Rec/Reg connections 1980 GS850G

    I am fitting a new (ex Ebay) Rec/Reg to 1980 GS850G.
Wiring colors are different and although i think I have this correct a bit of confirmation will be good before I button it all up for a run.
Attachment shows original wiring diagram with new wire colors inlaid.
    New colors:
3 yellow,1 red and the black for earth.

These replace the following colors on original Rec/Reg:

    White/red stripe
    White/blue stripe
    Yellow
    Red
    Black/yellow stripe on earth
If you are the electrical guru please comment.
    Hopefully to confirm correctness.

First we’re gonna ask you to show us the RR you bought off eBay. But yeah. All 3 stator wires go to the RR wires that are not red nor black. Doesn’t matter which of the remaining 3 connect to which stator wires. Not a guru, just someone who’s been there, done that.

This is how to connect it. Do NOT connect to the factory harness, other than to the + feed from the R/R.

3 yellow of R/R should go directly to the stator, doesnt matter which is which. If your wiring is stock one of the stator leads goes up into wiring harnes to headlight bucket and jumpers over to another and then back to the R/R (since 1980 doesnt have a headlight switch). But you can hook your 3 stator leads directly to you new R/R if it isnt already. If your stator is original (ha!, unlikely) it will have the colors of the schematic, most aftermarlket stators have 3 yellow.

Red of R/R goes to the Red of the bike harness for stock configuration.

Black of R/R is probably short and have a ring terminal, goes to mounting bolt of solenoid in stock configuration. That bolt should also have a ground wire (blk/wht) from the bike harness. Most folks want to run another of thier own wire from that bolt to battery negitive (is a couple reasons for that). Other folks prefer to extend that r/r black wire and run it directly to battery negitive.

Nessism: I do not have a SH775 as you have illustrated, what I have is similar to original except for wire colours. Mine uses bullet connectors as per original. Is it possible that the advice you give pertains specifically to the SH775

Redman: My bike has original colours from Stator.
I will review what I have done and compare with your advice for which I thank you

Thanks for input. As the new R/R is already bolted in place under battery housing I am not too keen to remove it again. However if you want to follow the Bay link it will provide the info requested.

Do you have a wiring diagram? If not you can find one here:

Rich82gs750tz gave you a pretty good answer the first time and Redman added some other info to help eliminate a known problem with the wiring harness. With that info you probably don't need the diagram but it's one more thing to look at. Wiring may seem like voodoo to some people but it's really pretty simple, take the next step and go for it!

LONG list of previous bikes not listed here.

These aren't my words, I just arrange them

uteman. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but from my own research and advice I've been given by the people on this site who know better, that RR you bought is likely a shunt type no better than OEM. Probably will work, for a while. IMHO, a genuine SH-775 is the way to go. And it's not just me. You'll find many such cased in the archives. Can be found for @$50 used. Nessism also buys used ones, tests them and sells them at a good value.

Doesn't matter what R/R you have, hook it up the same way as the illustration.
