Because "How" was the question. Not "Why".

    anyways, the OP said 'why".

Is there a way to turn off the daytime lights? Not too big of a deal, it's just annoying, and I don't want it to end up accidentally killing my battery.

But neither of his reasons make sense.

Back in "80" I put a little black 3/8" square 110V push-on push-off switch in the center of the dash on my GS1100E. Ran the headlight ground thru it to kill the headlight. Worked perfect for yrs. with no charging problems. Actually almost looked like it came that way.

          .

What's "Annoying" is a different question that goes to opinion. As to OPs weakening battery, I'm not sure but I have toggle switches on two bikes. My 2003 Kawasaki has an oem circuit that shuts headlamp off when starting.

Good idea. You could probably just use a spring-loaded pushbutton too so you couldn't forget it. Yes, switches per household voltages often have strong specs for the purpose and are tough.

Of the big four Japan motorcycle mfg., a couple of them had a lot better idea. One had the headlight not to come on till eng. started, another had a system where the headlight went off while starter button was engaged.

It's easy enough to disable the headlight while the starter is engaged, but I don't think that's what the OP wants.

Based on the limited wording in the original post (and no further explanation),
I get the impression that he wants to ride down the road with the headlight OFF.

I could be wrong, it's happened before.

Good point. So all the op has to do is make sure his RR is wired straight to the alternator as in the preferred method. Then add a switch to headlight circuit. When I rewired my bike I made sure I can have my lights off if I want( starting ect.). That being said, I always ride with my lights on. I even went a step further and installed led turn signals that act as running lights on the front and tail/ brake lights on the rear. The leds are bright giving you a much more visible presence.
