If using premium fuel in stock low compresion GS motorcycles causes preignition or detonation then there would be a lot of them with holes in the pistons. I know a lot of people who use premium in there bikes and have no problems.

Engine was completely stock, actually it was running GREAT, then I heard a noise that sounded like my keys were hitting the handlebars, I grabbed the keys the noise did not stop, I went to pull off the freeway & suddenly started losing power. Got to a gas station, let it cool off, it started back up just fine, rode it around the parking lot, no problem, went back on the road & it started to lose power again. I babied it down the road a few miles, pulled off the road & waited for a ride. Towed it home, pulled it apart thinking that it couldn't be that bad......

                    Not too much.

A shim that shattered when the "special tool" slipped off the edge of the bucket before the shim was in place.

#1 son insisted he was not racing when he twisted the driveshaft on his 650:

A broken valve that happened AFTER running the engine at 4,000 rpm to check stator outputs.

Not bike related, but on the wall, anyway, a piston from my turbo Corolla.
We were trying to get the jetting right, we missed it by this much:

It's not a Lycoming IO-720? Nah, they used to break crankshafts on the early models.
