Seat identification please

don't mean to jack this thread but since we're all talking about seats. I've got a seat that fits my 78 1000C, almost. The hinges and lock line up perfectly but the at the rear it sits about an inch higher than the rear body panel and also has a gap of about 1/2 maybe 3/4 of an inch from the panel as well. I measured it up with my other 78 seat that fits flush and it seems everything is the same until it comes to the very rear of the seat then the pan rises 3 inches compared to 2 inches on the other seat which fits flush. Any thoughts on what bike this seat originally came from?

To me the pan 'looks' like an 'E' pan and the cover suggests a '78 'C' model. I looked at it closely and can't figure it out. all the tabs for the cover look to be original.

***EDIT*** scratch that. my seat has four impressions between the two middle seat bumpers as does the '79 'C' seat on Ebay; yours has three.

2nd edit... The only seats that I know of, which use that style lower plastic trim and grab rail are the 78 C/EC 79 N/EN/S models and 80 1000 E/S models.

the '78 seats were a three wide pattern on the cover, the 79's were four wide. does it have wrong or bent hinges perhaps?

Fairly sure the seat has been recovered, it almost seems as though the foam is a bit too thick as the seat seems a bit 'over stuffed' although all the original metal clips are there and holding the seat material fine. None of the hinges are at all bent and like I said the seat pan lines up and sits on the bike perfectly (I don't know if a 79 seat would do that). Someone mentioned it may have been bent but I tried that and measuring things up it shows that extra inch on the height. I'm just wanting to properly ID the thing so I can trade/sell it and get the proper one. Thanks for your two cents rustybronco

I thought it had been recovered by the way the material was cut along the sides of the pan. my original thought was it's a E pan with a C cover on it. how does the 'ribbing' compare to your other seat?

***edit*** are the rearmost 'pad' brackets higher on the seat in question than the ones on your other seat?

Looks like a '78 C model seat to me. Could it possibly be because your rear fender the tail piece sits on is sagging, it's secured by the tail light hanger bolts I believe. I wished I was there to check it out.

No, I've swapped it onto my finished 78 1000C and the seat sits the same. 'Rustybronco' I measure the rear pad brackets and they are the same. I compared the pan with the other 1000C seat I have and they look identical. The seat has to bent or something I guess. It doesn't look bent but I have attempted to bend it down but again the rear rise is an inch higher when I measure it. Oh well, I'll keep messing with it and post the results. Thanks for the thoughts so far everyone.

Thanks for the thread AZR. I have exactly the same problem as you with the rear of the seat about 1" above the rear panel and I cannot see what's wrong. So post up any results that you come up with and hopefully it will help me as well.

No, my bike is a GS550 frame from '77. The seat like yours does not appear to be bent in any way, although it does not have the original seat cover. See pics below.




















Hope you can work out what the problem is. It would have been great if they stamped the part number on the seat so we could cross reference what bike the seat was off.
