Manual says 10W/30, not 30W, which is much thicker at ambient temperatures.Originally posted by chuck hahn View PostThe 50/50 ATF and 30 weight isnt a home brew recipe..its specifically stated right in the service manual for my 78 750E. It is Suzukis own recipe, so if it good enough for them its CHEAP enough for me...LOL.

If you are going to blend your own 'fork oil' using a 50/50 mix of ATF and motor oil, may I suggest using Dexron III ATF and a straight 20Wt oil, that way you should end up with about a 14 weight oil.

the 50/50 blend of ATF and 20Wt will (might) be a bit on the firm side for your tastes, so you may want to bump down to a 75/25 blend of ATF and 20Wt oil, which should end up being somewhere around 11~12Wt.

figure Dexron III ATF @ 7.5'ish and blend your way from there.

I respect Dale's suggestion only it's hard to find straight 20W.Originally posted by rustybronco View PostIf you are going to blend your own 'fork oil' using a 50/50 mix of ATF and motor oil, may I suggest using Dexron III ATF and a straight 20Wt oil, that way you should end up with about a 14 weight oil.

Yes thats the pics i remember from the manual..I may have missed the "10" part. I just mixed up straight 30 wt and ATF all 6 bikes have it and they handle just fine to me...MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Being the cheap skate that I am, I went looking for some straight 20W a while ago to blend into fork oil and couldn't find any. Some of the other Suzuki manuals call for 10W/20 but couldn't find that either.Originally posted by rustybronco View PostI thought it would be hard to find as well. but of all places to look, I found it at auto value. Put in new seals last year...bought Motul fork oil from the local shop (around $9.00, IIRC)...then came across an ad on the local Craigs, where a guy had closed his motorcycle shop and was liquidating some odds & ends. Among the miscellaneous items were a few bottles of Bel-Ray fork oil for (get this) $2.50 a quart. Had two left, by the time I got there, #10 and #20...I got both. Mixing them 50/50 brought great results, in fork feel. Had two left, by the time I got there, #10 and #20...I got both. Mixing them 50/50 brought great results, in fork feel.
Speaking of fork feel, I did once try the extra-virgin ...too much stiction. Last edited by Mysuzyq; 05-28-2011, 08:02 PM.'82 GS1100E Last edited by Mysuzyq; 05-28-2011, 08:02 PM.'82 GS1100E

I bought HD labeled oil, once, when I had my FXRC. Once, and never again. When I got it home I discovered that the the metal foil seals on each bottle had been tampered with and were no longer sealing. I was convinced that someone (a fine, upstanding employee of the dealership IMO) had replaced the HD oil with God knows what. I mentioned it to the partsman on my next visit. All I got in response was a good laff. Lesson learned.
As for using ATF, I remember doing that back in the early 70's per the owner's manual for my X-6 Hustler. I may just go back to the stuff.
WillieCommon sense has become so uncommon that I consider it a super power.

Someone probably bought it, used it, filled it with a facsimile, and returned it. Every now and then, someone returns a gallon of paint to the Home Depot that's just milk or something else instead of paint. Cheap bastards!Originally posted by willie View PostI bought HD labeled oil, once, when I had my FXRC. Once, and never again.
