Speedo hubs

I have 3 speedo hubs and decided to take them all apart to service them since who knows when they looked at last. Two were just about dry and the 3rd and plenty of grease in it. Anyways pulled them all part cleaned and ready to reassemble. Question is upon inspecting them, I notice the inside of the big gear is a passage machined in as spiral in it. Looks to me there should a type of oil in the hubs instead of grease? Any one have some thoughts on this? A certain level of oil or a good coating of high speed grease on the gears.

I use a good wheel bearing grease- boat trailer stuff is good- the machined spiral is probably a clever method to keep grease distributed rather than slinging it to one spot.

Well, I did say "probably"- when I openned one up, I just added grease and didn't notice the spiral. The grease will expand as it gets hot- after lubing a trailer axle, some grease forces its way out after a long haul.
