    problem checking valve clearance

Yesterday I decided to pull the cover off and check the valve clearances. I was using the zip tie method which has worked great for me in the past. It worked great again yesterday until I got to the #2 exhaust valve. When I turn the engine manually the valve seems to be working fine - the bucket comes up just like the rest of the valves. But when I insert the zip tie and turn the engine, the cam turns but the valve bucket does not come up. I get a huge space between the cam and the shim and the bucket seems to be stuck in the head. I've tried doing it a few times with the same results. Without the zip tie the bucket seems to come up perfectly but as soon as I insert the zip tie it gets stuck. What could be causing this?

Actually ALL of your buckets should act like that, because the zip-tie is holding the valve open.

When the valve is held open, the spring can not push it back toward the cam.

That's what I was thinking, until I reread the post and he has done the zip-tie method before...

You need that space to be there so you can get the shim out.

I got it thanks. I managed to take out the shim and replace it.
