Yesterday I decided to pull the cover off and check the valve clearances. I was using the zip tie method which has worked great for me in the past. It worked great again yesterday until I got to the #2 exhaust valve. When I turn the engine manually the valve seems to be working fine - the bucket comes up just like the rest of the valves. But when I insert the zip tie and turn the engine, the cam turns but the valve bucket does not come up. I get a huge space between the cam and the shim and the bucket seems to be stuck in the head. I've tried doing it a few times with the same results. Without the zip tie the bucket seems to come up perfectly but as soon as I insert the zip tie it gets stuck. What could be causing this?

Actually ALL of your buckets should act like that, because the zip-tie is holding the valve open.
When the valve is held open, the spring can not push it back toward the cam.

You need that space to be there so you can get the shim out.Comment
