Changed oil... Runs like crap
I have a 80 gs750L. The bike had been sitting for several years. The carbs have been cleaned, rebuilt, and dynojetted last month. The carbs have all been sync'd. I rode the bike for about a week with the oil that was in it when I bought it. Ran great. Starter running a little hesitant shortly after. Found cyclinder 2 running lean. Adjusted the carb to fix that. Anyways I changed the oil with general advance auto parts oil and replaced the filter... Shortly after started going down hill... Started stalling when coming to a stop... Seemed to lack power. Didn't seem like it was before. So! Last night I changed the oil again with rotella oil in the white jug and a new oil filter. Seem to run ok at first.. Then started dying again when coming to a stop. Well if you start it and let it run at idle you can see smoke coming out of the hose that would of went to my airbox (I'm running pods) and the smoke smells like fresh oil. i don't know... The problem has nothing to do with the oil.
Please check the Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature. It will help steer you in the proper direction to getting your bike up and running.Ed

Check your oil level with the bike on centerstand, shouldn't go above full mark on sight glass. Too much oil and it'll start pumping it out the breather and anywhere else it can find a cavity.Comment

+1 on that, if you overfill it a lot it will run like cr@p too, as well as smoke, and leak.......1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!Comment

Assuming that you didn't overfill it,( And you didn't check the oil level while the bike was on the sidestand, right?) then blowby from that breather indicates you have some bad rings.Comment

Okay, guess I need to preface. By saying the problem is not the oil I was assuming you did a proper job when changing it. If you installed more than the specified amount then all bets are off.
Please tell us you didn't check oil level with the bike on the side stand.
The typical GS takes just a little less than one gallon of oil when you change both oil and filter at the same time. If you shoved more than a gallon in the engine, that may be the problem.
