    Rotella Oil

Hi. Everyone seems to use Shell Rotella oil in their bike but I live in the UK and no one stocks it. I know I could use 'bike' oil but what else in the UK is suitable, I have looked on the backs of oil bottles but they do not seem to list the same oil codes as 'bike' oil.

    Regards.

Rotella is not a "bike" oil at all; it is a diesel truck oil. Probably most diesel truck dino oils in 15-40 would be just fine and roughly equivalent to Rotella. It just so happens here in the US that you can get a gallon of that for $12 or so at Wal-Mart. There have been plenty of good discussions about oil, and searches will get you plenty to chew on (probably too much). One salient point that was made about diesel oil - beyond the fact that they don't have friction modifiers which could cause clutch slippage and nice additives like Zinc and Phosphorous - is that they tend to be very stable. Trucking companies (which stand to lose/gain a lot based on their oil choice) test their oils, find something that works well, and stick with it. That's why the selection is much less than conventional car oils, but the product should be more consistent.

This discussion came up awhile back and a UK member posted the tech data sheet for UK formula Castrol 10W-40 and it had lots of zinc and phosphorus (high pressure additives). Good stuff over there compared to the weak sauce they sell us in USA.

Yep - Castrol GTX 10W-40 for diesels (UK market only). Recommended for all the GS models.

For some reason the Euro do-gooders overlooked the stuff in it that killed all those Antarctic polar bears and we kept the good recipe.

                Rotella oil

if you check with some of the coastal fishing ports they may well stock Rotella, fishermen would be very perticulal about the well being of their engines, NIFPO, Northern Ireland Fish Producers Orgination in Portavogie Co Down did stock it and perhaps still do.

Been searching for Rotella as well and keep coming across references to it being the same Rimula (http://www.expert-oil.com/site.xp/04...050053049.html) which is available here in RT4.

Maxol is widely available here and they are specific that their semi syn 10/40 is ok.
