    Noob question - seat interchangeability?

Hi folks, first time Suzuki owner here... really happy to discover this forum.

I just came into a '78 GS1000 "skunk" with the stock seat, but it's torn and needs recovering. I could simply have it re-upholstered, but I also found someone with an '80 or '81 standard seat, recently re-done, and it'd save me a little money to swap it out.

I know the grab rail is different, but otherwise, will the seat fit? If not, does anyone know who offers the most authentic seat covers? Or just choose one off eBay?

Thanks in advance. More questions coming, I'm sure, as I try to get it in good running order!

I'm sure we'd all like to see pictures of your skunk.

The 80/81 seat won't fit your bike.

Hmmm. Thanks, Hampshirehog. Disappointing. Would a 79 seat fit?

Rob - I'll post pics when I can. Currently it's a bagger with faring. I may keep it as such for a while, since I want to take a road trip this summer... Eventually it'll "get nekkid" though.

A 79 seat will fit. Note some are flat topped and some have a slightly raised rear but they're interchangeable.

            Good, so I can seek a 78 or a 79.
Okay, one last question... Will a 79 or earlier 750 seat fit also?

No. You need one from a 1000. Unless you want to do some mod work.

A 1980 1000E seat will fit, but not an 1100E nor any shaft drive bikes.

Life is too short to ride an L.

I see. Okay, I'm hearing it came off a 1981 1000 shaft bike. I guess that clinches it -- too bad. Thanks for the guidance though.

Any opinions about who makes the best replica seat covers?
