didn't really expect this to be controversial. it is an aftermarket seat pan. i looked really closely at the sticker and it was made by a company called "smc acu-weld, inc." googled it and couldn't find much info. so that's why it doesn't have the ribs. everything else lines up for the skunk. even the studs for the plastic trim underneath.

thanks for the replies guys. it's awesome how serious we are about our bikes here.

      Only Eric made it controversial.

So it may have came with a mustang seat or something similar?

i dunno. i found it just as in the pictures. in a pile of parts i'd forgotten about.

i'm gonna remove the rivets, clean it up, paint it nice, find the necessary hardware and use it on something.

This stuff from Home Depot will eat off the rust. Soak the pan for a few hours and you will be amazed. Works better than media blasting which has difficulty getting into the rust pits.

Is that in the paint department, Ed?

Any special treatment after soaking it?

Rinse (of course), polish, clear coat, ... ?

What does it to to chrome?

Looking at removing some rust from some chromed accessories, hoping maybe this might work.

exactly the same thing, can be achieved using molasses.....
9 parts of water with 1 part of molasses = phosphoric acid.
i use this all the time....its gentle and very cheap

Paint department Steve. Rinse with water when done. Best to towel dry to avoid a bunch of flash rust. Most production based paint shops use phosphate washes to clean and prep parts for paint. It is acid so don't think I'd put anything in it with a clear coat or such. I've used it to clean rusted chrome parts and it works, but not sure it's ideal for that job. Oxalic acid is prefered for derusting chrome since it won't hurt the metal or good chrome.
