    Instrument cluster identification

I'm looking to replace my instrument cluster on my GS850 because the needles on my tachometer and speedometer broke. Looking at ebay I found out my cluster is not original to the bike. I've attached a picture of my cluster. Does anybody know which bike this came off of?

I would have to GUESS it would be one of the smaller GSes from before 1980.

Only because the speedo tops out at 120 instead of the usual coveted 140.

I can tell you it's NOT 78 550E. Looks quite a bit different than mine.

Hey steve, my 550 has the 140 speedo, and I know all three previous owners. Was there an option for that or something? It is the original gauge set.

No, in '80, the government safety weenies decided that too many people were killing themselves trying to 'bury the needle' on the speedo, and the national speed limit was only 55 mph anyway, so what's the use of having a speedo that went to 140? So the mandated that all speedos could show no more than 85 mph. There was no option at the time, you got what the bike came with. That only lasted a few years, then the 140 speedos came back. Some owners feel downright deprived if their speedo can not show how fast they were going, so they look for the 140 models.
