    repair of side rail

The side rail broke on my 1980 Gs550L.

It broke exactly on the 90 degree bend of the tab that attaches it with the bolt that holds the turn signal bracket on to the bike.

Can it be welded together at the break? Or would it be better to replace the whole tab?

    Picture is attached.

view is from bottom of rail. front of rail is on the right of the picture.

If you could afford a slight increase in thickness I think I would first weld the two parts back together, grind smooth and then braze thin doublers on both sides. If you can't make it any thicker then you should cut off the whole tab and replace it with a new one.
