Should've just cut the tach in half
...and glued it back together. I thought it would be easier to pry the metal cover off to get at the guts. Now the metal ring is broken, and the rubber that seals the glass is pretty shredded. Before I wander around Home Depot looking for something that would work... Anyone here been in the same situation and found a suitable solution for sealing the glass and holding it in place?Tags: None -
Prying has always worked for me, you just have to do it slowly, in small steps, not all at once.
In fact, I am getting ready to do it again to my speedo. Last time I was in there (to adjust the reading on the odometer), the needle did not get put back in the correct position, so it's off by 3 MPH all the way up the scale.

I already got it open by prying, now I need to get it back together. I found a bunch of write ups, and I too thought that prying would be less intrusive. I made a mess of it though...
I broke the bezel and shredded the seal prying from the top (some of the write ups said you can pry from the top or the bottom).Comment

I'm sure I can find some kind of rubber (or silicone if it comes to that) to seal it, but in looking for a bezel I'm coming up short and need some ideas...
I measured it to be 102mm inside diameter. I found some at 85mm, some at 110mm here --->http://www.partdeal.com/vdo-bezel-tr...3210763-s.html
I also found a few make/model specific replacement bezels in other places that don't list measurements, mostly for cars...Comment

I'm hoping someone on here can help out with info on a bezel from another vehicle/gauge that will fit (since most don't list measurements, just what they'll fit), or some other bracket, etc. that will hold the glass in place, and still fit in the plastic gauge case...Comment

My speedo and tach worked well enough by shooting silicone spray into the existing holes in back. Tried prying but twisting against the PVC shell really made it's mark and still got me nowhere near close to pryed off. It'll be a hacksaw and gorilla tape next time.2001 Kawasaki Voyager XII (Current bike)

This is where I'm at right now. The bezel split halfway prying it up, and the rest of the way bending it back down...
I need to find a replacement bezel, but not having much luck...
Any ideas?Comment

I've spent untold hours pulling apart old Honda tachs in an attempt to fix them. My conclusions is that the bearings start to wear out and snag and they are not repairable. Sometimes you can get a little bit more time out of them with lube but that's it.2003 SV650 full fairing on a formerly naked bike so it has handlebars, not clipons

Have you checked out a glass place? You already have the dimensions. Good luck!I'm hoping someone on here can help out with info on a bezel from another vehicle/gauge that will fit (since most don't list measurements, just what they'll fit), or some other bracket, etc. that will hold the glass in place, and still fit in the plastic gauge case...Comment

Thanks for all the advice, guys. The tach worked fine, but the light deflector had come loose and was rattling around inside...
Either way, thanks to Cowboyup I've got a replacement on the way!Comment

Like the title says... Next time I need to dig in to one of these gauges, I'll either pry from the bottom or just cut the sucker in half.
...the more you know.Comment
