quick clearance question
when inserting a new shim and not running the engine, is the gap between the lobe and shim gonna be smaller, or larger than what it is going to end up being?Ian

feel dumb im sure its gonna be smaller than what the real clearance is,.....so rechecked the shims and all were good again, except 2, i have no clue how i would've got it wrong the first time but the first ones clearance was .3 mm, took it out and saw it was a 2.80 and i didnt have any higher than that so put it back in, clearance went all the way to .07mm. got me confused. maybe im not inclined for this. checked the ones i swapped and one was a bit too much of a clearance had a shim for it though to bring it back to a in spec clearance.Ian

0.07 is within specs, go with it.
There's two reasons that I can think of that would make the same size shim change value. 1) The shim got some dirt, metal shaving etc on it or 2) It was measured with the cam lobe in the wrong position, perhaps twice.2001 Kawasaki Voyager XII (Current bike)

yes i think i measured it wrong first, i had it in the right position when i noticed the huge gap, but i took the shim in and out and it was gone, could something be on my valve making it stick a bit? i mean would having it get sat correctly by running it make that huge of a difference in the gapIan

ill add this, that shim with the huge cleaarance was by far the hardest shim to get out with a clearance that big theres no way it shoudve been stuck as it was.Ian
