not so quick clearance question.....

oh jeez, where do i start. i said that one of my gaps between the shim and lobe was .3mm and then i took the shim out and back in and now its back in spec.. fell asleep and woke up refreshed to work, my exhaust three that was showing spec clearance now has no clearance... i swapped the shim to one .1mm smaller and still no clearance..... i have the other ones in spec out of the 4 i just checked.

when i first started trying to do this valved clearance i was not putting the valve shim tool in the right spot causing the engine to seize and making me turn the engine backwards. i haven't seen a disclaimer on the procedure to not turn it backwards, but again you probably should know not to anyways if its something thatll mess up your engine.


i am not confused with the spec sizes i guess i shouldnt say .2 or .1mm instead .20 or .10

did i ruin my timing

this is killing me guys i wish i had somebody who knew better here to help

edit: dont know but i guess sticking valves could be another reason if thats a thing, this engine has only been running for about 3 or so minutes from the now 9MONTHS its been down. oof


edit 2: not the spark plug, i mean the tool you put in the spark plug hole, the stress mustve got to me there

6 out of the 8 are well in spec all .07-.08 ive been triple checking, turning the engine multipe times and rechecking, i just have 2 that are wrong. intake 1 and exhaust 3, exhaust three is showing no clearance whatsoever which suprises me because not long ago i had a clearance in it, and intake one is at .13-.14mm and needs a 2.75 to be at .08-.09mm. intake 3 showed no clearance whatsoever and then i turned the engine a few times and the clearance was back, but exhaust 3 doesnt wanna budge for me

Relax and take a day off.....come back to bike later and recheck all clearances. Keep track of shim coming out versus shim going in!
Remove all the spark plugs to ease crank rotation ...don?t turn crank backwards ,as it will stress the rear chain guide.

is valves sticking a thing? it just stressed me about turning the timing backwards and possibly knocking it off time. ill probably do some painting instead of the valves and get at the gasket. aslong as it doesnt sound like i need an overhaul or taking the head off i wont be over my head. i was forsure when i first started thinking like that.

When I first attempted valve clearance checks I drew up a chart with inlet valves along the top line, a space underneath each valve for the current shim size then a space underneath for the shim I needed to get the gap back into spec.
When I get back to work Monday I will dig it off of the work computer and try and attach it to the thread so you can see how I did it.
It was so much easier when you had it all in front of you and you could keep track of which shim could be moved to where.
Forgot to add I did the same for the exhaust shims as well.

I too had erratic readings. WOuld check clearance, turn engine some to check others, then turn engine to come back and check again and get different readings. That was quite puzzling.

Do have to check the clearance with not only each cam in certain position when checking it, but also the cam next to it in a certain position, so the cam next to it is not being pushed around by the valve spring.... OH.,... that is why the proceedure is the way it is......

that may very well be my issue if it causes things like crazy readings like no clearance or a huge clearance, couldnt troubleshoot that as my problem myself, but im sure a response letting me know whats going on with my bike will come around. thanks for the suggestion i feel like it could be a possibility. as for now im just gonna leave it for a bit, turn the engine a few times before i check them, and re check to see if the clearances are as they were.

rechecked clearances, all that are in spec are all .07-.08mm, i will record exactly which ones when i go back to it again. exhaust 3 is still no clearance at all and intake 1 is at .13mm, it has a 2.70 will go to a 2.75.

for the good news, all except one will forsure be at .07-.08mm so very close together, on the bad news i dont get why one of my clearances had skyrocketed to .3mm and went back to .07 after taking shim out and in, but maybe those valve spring positions might be the cause. and still confused by exhaust 3 having a clearance going to none.

It?s always possible that a piece of grit/old gasket is stuck under shim giving you a no clearance reading...must be clean!

Agreed, sounds like a general slow down on your entire project is in order. Having two threads for the same issue isn't helping it get done any sooner.

gonna not be working on it till tuesday and ill rotate the engine and check clearances every day or so just making sure nothing funny happens, may scrape the oil pan and where it connects little by little during the time.

ill say its better that im worrisome about an issue than blowing it off, i always remind myself that i couldve slapped it all back together and started it, sure, but would it be running right, probably not.
