Tachometer drive gear is not turning (GS 450L)

Hi,

i just bought an 81 GS450L bike and after buying a new tachometer cable i noticed the problem was coming from the drive gear on the engine side which is not turning. Any idea what the cause might be and what are my options for solving it?
With the new cable and an electrical screwdriver i tried to test the tachometer on the dashboard, which also seems to have a problem: if i turn the screwdriver it turns the needle and holds it into position, something like a wall clock does when you set the time. To turn it back to zero i have to unscrew the cable.

That's not supposed to happen. The tach needle is properly moved by the cable spinning a magnet inside. When the magnet doesn't spin, the spring on the needle returns it to 0

If the tab that is the outside end of the drive gear is not spinning when the motor is running, I’d remove the valve cover to inspect the damage before removing the screw and drive gear shaft from the head. It just might keep the broken end from falling into somewhere where it might be difficult to retrieve.

After you see what’s broken, you can order the parts you need, be sure to replace the oil seal inside that piece and the flat oring on the outside.

The clock is working properly now, maybe the needle was just stuck because of long time of inactivity.
Will open the valve cover but it will have to wait a little as now i don t have access to any of the gaskets and o-rings that i will need to replace, total lockdown where I live.

You'll find that just about any parts you need for bikes of this age will need to be ordered. Many common wear related parts are available in the aftermarket and can be ordered through just about any powersports shop, this often saves shipping costs. If they're not available in the aftermarket and it has to come from from Suzuki they can probably get it for you but will want you to cover the shipping.

The long and short of it is you're usually better off money wise to order what you need directly. eBay is for sure your friend for used and aftermarket parts. Genuine Suzuki can be sent directly to you via Babbitts.com, partsoutlaw.com etc.
