    Rear wheel flange crack

    I was preparing my wheels to get powder coated. When I cleaned and degreased them I noticed a a tiny crack one the rear wheel flange from the side where hub is attached. I am not sure if the crack is just a result of steel axle sleeve being pressed into the wheel or it?s a damage or a defect. The bike has about 40?000 miles on the odo. Has anyone seen something like that before?

            That's alarming! I'd be looking for another wheel, myself.

                Is this on your 650? If so, is it a G or an L? I happen to have an 82 650G roller in the garage. It's pretty well picked over, but has wheels and a few bits left. If you don't already have a source for another wheel, and you're interested in this one, let me know. I have one from an 80 850G that is a slightly different design but same size that I can trow on the 650 so it'll still roll. It will take some work to get things swapped around since the 80 wheel doesn't have a tire on it. Anyway, if you need the wheel I've got some time this week to shuffle this stuff around.

                      I still don't understood why Flickr does that.

                        I'm in Albuquerque, NM.

                        Shipping won't be cheap for this, as you know. Ebay has some for pretty cheap. One in Michigan for $35 and free shipping HOWEVER it says it's a 16" wheel so it may be from an L model..

                        Hope you find something.

                            Thanks to all who responded;
                            So, I ordered a 'new' (another) wheel, which, as stated, was from bike with only 4k miles.
                            The new wheel has a same crack in the same area. Is that just a production flaw? It looks like the 'crack' or rather slight separation is where still sleeve joins the aluminum wheel body.

                            That new has definitely less miles than mine, the wheel hub teeth prove that:

                              Test the metals on eac side. I thought it was a joint. A drop of muriatic acid maybe?
                              Metals look dissimilar
                              Maybe the wheel side gets rolled over the insert during final machining
