You can use a screw driver or a pair of pliers. Anything with an insulated handle and that will keep your hand away from the ensuring sparks but yes you simply short the two terminals together and she should kick. If not, then you either have no juice to the solinoid or it is shot.Originally posted by my98xplorer

there's no juice going from the starter button to the relay, so either the button's shot or dirty ,or, there's an open in the return wire

I have about 10v going from the button to the relay. I checked it right before the relay and sure enough, you hit the button and juice goes through. Any other idea?? Im stumped!

and yet when you jumpered it to the same terminal it closed? did you jumper the 2 big terminals, or 1 big and the smaller one? you need to jumper between the main + from battery and the smaller +(from starter button) that pulls in the solenoid....if that doesn't work the solenoid/relay is badOriginally posted by my98xplorerI have about 10v going from the button to the relay. I jumped it from the 2 big terminals. There are only 2 on my relay, then the wire that comes from the start button it soldered on there.
This is what mine looks like. I just dont understand why it wont start the bike? I have power going to it, i have a good relay, there is power coming from the wire that comes from the start button, and when i touch the terminals together the bike turns over??

you need to check it by jumpering from the big terminal from battery to the wire that's soldered to starter button lead....when you jumpered between the 2 big terminals it bypasses the relay.... just showing you the starter works....Originally posted by my98xplorerI jumped it from the 2 big terminals. Ok i jumped it from the power terminal to the point where the start wire is soldered in and nothing. I have a hard time believing that the relay is bad, this is the 3rd one ive tried and i also used a couple of normal 12v relays to see if they would work and nothing. Any more ideas?? Thanks a lot for all of your help!

Sorry dood but that test is indicatiing a bad solinoid. It is not engaging. Did you test all three this way? Maybe you have more than one problem.

I had it mounted to the metal plate that is next to that battery. Is there supposed to be a ground wire? All i have is the wire that goes to the starter on 1 terminal, and the pos battery cable, fuse box power and main fuse power on the other one. Where does the ground for the relay go?Originally posted by daveoyou DID have the solenoid/relay grounded when testing....?
