New owner of 82' GS1100 I need your help

I recently purchased a 1982 GS 1100E. I Went to start up and was making a strange loud ticking noise from the alternator stator cover area. So I shut it off and tried to restart it, but would'nt start at all. Pulled the starter motor and tested it, all was good there. I was able to push start it and took it for a ride and it ran fine, with hardly any noise coming from the alternator/stator area. Tried to start it and just the starter motor was engaging. Could it possibly be the starter clutch? If you have any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate any input.
    Thanks,

If the starter is spinning freely, but the engine is not turning, it is the starter clutch. Unfortunately, a starter clutch assembly is nearly 200.00. Good thing is, you probably have a case where the bolts holding the clutch fast have backed out....you can buy the bolts seperately if the other parts of the clutch assembly are still good, though. A common trick is to remove the old (8mm, I think) bolts, of which there are three. Then, drill and tap the holes for those bolts out to a 10mm or 12mm bolt size...hardness for those bolts is 12.8 or 12.9, I believe. Do a search here in the tech forums, because I think I read that here somewhere awhile back when I had trouble. In my case, the problem fixed itself, so I didn't mess with it. It was doing the same thing you describe, but then stopped, and functioned normally. Haven't heard a peep since (about a year or so ago)

Oh, and if you push start the bike, please remember your stator will not function with a malfunctioning starter clutch!!! So you'll kill the battery within a few miles. It happened to me....went out, and got the bike push started, and the battery lasted about 15 or 20 miles.

    Good luck, Dude!!!

Just wondering why the starter clutch would affect the stator, Unless the rotor came loose too.

Wait a minute. :-) The stator is the stationary part that is bolted to the engine side cover. The rotor is a taper fit onto the crankshaft end and turns with the crankshaft. The starter clutch is mounted to the backside of the rotor (between the rotor and engine) You could remove the starter clutch completely and it would have nothing to do with the charging system. The starter clutch is a sprague clutch. It freewheels in one direction and locks in the other. If its mount screws are broken off, it will freewheel in both directions and the electric starter cannot turn the engine over, but that still will have no effect on the charging syste,.

There are three mounting machine screws that hold the starter clutch housing/assembly to the back of the rotor. Those three screws have broken off. you will need a rotor puller, new side cover gasket, and three machine screws to fix the problem.

Huh...mine was doing the exact same thing as he describes....free spinning starter; I push started the bike, and my bike died about 25 feet from my drive way; after the problem mysteriously corrected itself (began starting normally again) the charging system functioned perfectly.

The complete rotor/clutch assembly spinning on the crankshaft loosly, I would think would be enough unnatural noise that my reaction would be OMG! and I would shut it down immediately.

Yes, if the whole assembly is flopping around in there, its not going to charge. LOL
