I wanted to check my valve clearance since my #1 cylinder valves seem particularly noisy but:
1. I removed all the bolts per the Hayne's manual and I can't get the cover off. (The book says to loosen the bolts holding the head to the block on the ends of the block? Why? They don't go thru the valve cover!) What am I missing? Is the valve cover just stuck? How do I get the chrome end pieces off as well? There are no directions for those. Do they attach to the cover only so they come off with the valve cover? This engine is a little different than my old 1980 GS850G.
and
2. I managed to break off a valve cover bolt head when tightening it back on after not getting the valve cover off. I was using a torque wrech set at the manual specs. No leak as of yet, but I'm going to pull the bolt and replace it when I finally get the valve cover off!
Also,
Where can I get the little knob to reset the trip meter on the Spedometer???? and where can I get the bucket shim removal tool?
Thanks for all your assistance. I love you guys (and gals!)

:and take off the end caps(2 screws each) use a plastic-headed hammer (or a short piece of wood dowel) to tap the valve cover at each end - that should pop it loose. If that doesn't work, tap harder. You could wedge a screwdriver under one end and pry, but you really don't want to know how much a valve cover is worth, do you? Message here: be careful. It'll come off eventually. You'll need a new gasket. Soak it in WD-40 or equiv. before re-installing and the cover won't get stuck again.
