I was wondering if it is possible to safely charge the battery without removing it from the bike?

sure, you just have to use a small charger, anything over a few amps will cook the battery in the long run.

I wasn't very clear about exactly what I wanted to know.

I'm wondering if it's possible to charge the battery without removing the airbox? I was hoping to access the battery just through the side covers, but it really doesn't look like there's enough room to connect to the terminals or even get at them.

if you get a decent charger made for charging motorcycles it will come with a pig tail that connects to the battery and the other end is out where you can get to it and plug it in without having to disassemble the bike.

I have good charger, but it doesn't have a that type of clip. I think I'll try get a pig tail at the hardware store that will work.
